Rawson named new library director

The Fitchburg Library board this week appointed Wendy Rawson as the library director. She will be the first full-time library director for Fitchburg, according to a news release by the City.

Rawson will assume her duties as library director effective Oct. 4.

Town hall meeting to discuss Fitchburg budget
The 2011 city budget will be the topic of Mayor Jay Allen’s town hall meeting on Aug. 31.

The mayor has asked departments to limit their expenses and possibly cut positions, however, the city plans to include several capital expenses, including funding for two new fire stations over the next few years.

At the last Common Council meeting, the mayor reported that he has asked city departments to limit the increase of non-wage operating budgets to 4 percent of the actual operating cost in 2009.

3 suspects identified after burglary
Fitchburg police apprehended one suspect and identified two others who may be linked to a residential burglary Aug. 24, according to a news release issued by the police.

Danecom revival in the works
After simmering all spring and most of the summer on the failed Danecom proposal, governments and emergency services all over the county are beginning to take another look at making their radios compatible with one another. Danecom, is the county’s plan to make a variety of VHF and 800mHz radio systems more connectible.

The Fitchburg Police, in conjunction with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, will host a community meeting Wednesday, Aug. 11 about a registered sex offender moving into Fitchburg.

Council hacks most sidewalk retrofits from capital plan

After nearly two hours of discussion, the council agreed to add an amendment to Bloomquist’s amendment to hack all sidewalk projects, with the exception of three, totaling an estimated $585,000 cut out of the budget.

Council keeps new fire stations in 2011 budget
The City of Fitchburg is moving forward with a plan to build two new fire stations next year – despite likely costing about $5 million more than originally anticipated.

A study last year estimated the two stations, which would replace the two existing stations, on King James Way and Lacy Road, would cost about $9 million to $11 million, and more recent estimates have put the cost more than $14 million.

The City of Fitchburg will present a plan Tuesday that attempts to cull development and preserve farmland and natural areas. The open house meeting regarding the city's Farmland Preservation Plan takes place at 5 p.m. at city hall. A short presentation scheduled for 6 p.m.

Fitchburg might not have a library yet, but residents can be there as each two-by-four gets nailed together during the construction of the Fitchburg Public Library.

Candlelight vigil held for local volunteer
A candlelight vigil will be held for Jawaun McClain on Tuesday, July 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Allied Boys & Girls Club located on 4619 Jenewein Road in Fitchburg.

McClain, who worked at the Allied Boys & Girls Club, drowned in Lake Monona last Thursday while celebrating his birthday.

Car thefts continue
The Fitchburg Police issued a Citizen Watch e-mail July 22 in which they caution citizens to be on the look out for car theft.

Car theft incidents have already occurred this summer, with the FPD recently catching a group of teenage boys on July 17 who were behind several of the thefts in the Swan Creek Neighborhood.

Car thefts heating up this summer
After recovering stolen goods, Fitchburg police are asking anyone the Swan Creek Neighborhood who had items stolen out of their car to contact the police department at 270-4300.

Two 19-year-old and two 17-year-old males, all from the fitchburg area, are suspected of car theft, Fitchburg Police Lt. Todd Stetzer said, after police found stolen goods in their car.

Library funding three-quarters done

The multi-million dollar price tag for the new Fitchburg Public Library is being whittled away.

The Fitchburg Public Library Board Capital Campaign accepted a $5,000 check from Fitchburg businessman Stuart Brown at Tuesday’s Common Council meeting and reported about $350,000 worth of other recent donations.

Relay for Life having better year
With 17 registered teams participating this year, the 2010 Verona/Fitchburg Relay for Life is on it’s way to getting back on track after a down year in 2009.

 “We’re hoping to rebound to the levels raised in 2008, which was around $40,000,” community relations director Adam Layne said. “Fundraising is looking up from last year but its a little early to tell on the final count. So far this year we’re seeing a large recovery from last.”
